Design and Implementation of Gaseous Pollutants Level Monitoring System

Project Synopsis

Air pollution is a leading factor for many health diseases in the world. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 9 out of 10 people breathe contaminated air. Also, approximately 7 million people die each year due to aerosol pollutants. Although air pollution is a global issue, many of the cities with very low air quality are in low- and middle-income countries. In Ghana, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reported in 2019 that air quality levels were 11 times higher than the WHO-recommended levels. There is therefore an urgent need to improve air quality levels in the country. Experts emphasize that adequate infrastructure for air quality monitoring and gathering of localized data is crucial for informing policy direction on air pollution. In this study, we design a low-cost Internet-of-Things (IoT) based gaseous pollutant level monitoring system. The system consists of two broad systems: a pollutant detection system and a monitoring system.

The pollutant detection system uses sensors to determine the state of pollution in the atmosphere. The monitoring system uses a graphical interface and color representations to display the status of air quality.
